A 38-year-old Florida man, Phillip Ortiz, identified as a Miami attorney, has been charged with aggravated battery on a person 65 or older after allegedly knocking an elderly crew member unconscious aboard the Norwegian Encore on November 22.

According to police, the incident began when Ortiz attempted to enter a restricted hallway. When the crew member blocked him, Ortiz allegedly became aggressive, cursed at him, and pushed him. A woman accompanying Ortiz also shoved the employee, who pushed her back. Ortiz then reportedly charged the crew member, knocking him to the ground and causing him to lose consciousness.

Ortiz was arrested and later released on $1,000 bail. The Norwegian incident comes amid heightened concern about cruise ship violence, following the recent homicide ruling in the death of a Florida teenager on a Carnival cruise.
