Read the full news report here: Cruise passenger dies after fatal jet ski accident at Carnival’s private island
Incident Details:
The accident occurred around 1:00 PM, with Half Moon Cay’s manager contacting police in Eleuthra shortly afterward. Despite medical personnel being present on the scene, they were unable to revive the passenger, and she was pronounced dead by the local medical doctor. An investigation is ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the fatal accident.
Ship and Passenger Impact:
The only cruise ship at Half Moon Cay during the incident was Holland America Line’s Nieuw Amsterdam, which was completing the final day of a 7-night cruise from Fort Lauderdale. The ship remained at the private island following the accident, causing significant delays to cruise operations.
Operational Disruptions:
The ship’s return to Fort Lauderdale was delayed, forcing Holland America to postpone embarkation for the next cruise. Originally scheduled to begin at 2:00 PM on March 23, embarkation was pushed back to 4:30 PM, with departure delayed until 8:00 PM. Passengers were advised to reschedule flights departing no earlier than 5:00 PM from Fort Lauderdale airport and 7:00 PM from Miami airport.
Company Response:
Holland America provided complimentary Wi-Fi to affected passengers to help them make necessary travel adjustments and contact family members. The cruise line’s next 7-night Western Caribbean itinerary, including a return to Half Moon Cay, remains unchanged despite the incident.
