2 cruise ships fail CDC cleanliness inspections of their vessels

As a cruise ship passenger, is your health at risk?

2 more cruise ships have failed inspections of their vessels by the Center for Disease Control (CDC).

The Regent Seven Seas Navigator and Un-Cruise Adventure’s Safari Endeavor both failed recent cleanliness exam inspections in June 2013.

The Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) assists the cruise ship industry to prevent and control the introduction, transmission, and spread of gastrointestinal (GI) illnesses on cruise ships.

According to reports, “poor record keeping, food handling, storage and debris violations all contributed to the failures.”

Why do health inspections matter to you as a passenger?

The inspections handled by the CDC are done to help maintain industry regulation and provide passengers with a safe sailing environment.

As a passenger, your main interest is having an enjoyable vacation. However, if you could avoid booking a cruise on a ship with repeated health and food inspection violations, you would probably do so.

You can check CDC scores here for the cruise lines.

Are cruise line liable for sick passengers?

The simple answer to that question is, yes. Cruise lines are responsible for providing a safe and healthy sailing environment for their passengers and crew. If a cruise line or its staff are negligent in their efforts to provide that safe sailing environment, then they may be liable for medical issues incurred by their passengers.

Each medical claim brought against a cruise line is individual and specific unto itself. If you feel you have a potential claim against a cruise line after becoming sick while on a cruise vacation, you should contact an attorney.

An attorney with cruise ship claim experience can help you ask and answer questions that would help determine if you have a viable claim.
