ArabianIndustry.com reports a French passenger was removed from the Costa Luminosa with a broken leg while the cruise ship was traveling in the Red Sea.
Costa Luminosa is one of the Costa Cruises fleet vessels, an Italian cruise line owned by Carnival Cruise Line in Miami.
According to the report, “an elderly French passenger was evacuated from the ship Costa Luminosa last week after she suffered a broken leg while sailing between Salalah and Aqaba. The Saudi Border Guard received the ship’s distress call on Thursday afternoon and the naval vessel Al-Layth from the Prince Mohammed Bin Naif naval base in Jeddah was deployed. The passenger, who was not named, was taken to Prince Mohammed Bin Naif base, where she was provided medical assistance and transferred by Border Guard ambulance to Saudi German Hospital, accompanied by a shipping agent from the cruise line.”
Broken legs and arms are relatively common injuries that can be sustained by passengers while on cruises. Usually the result of slips and falls – particularly with the elderly – they are generally treatable by onboard medical staff. It’s less likely that the injuries would require a passenger to be taken off of a ship unless the injury was severe or additional complications were diagnosed. However, smaller cruise ships like the Costa Luminosa may be less able to properly handle emergencies like a broken leg.
There was no indication of how the accident occurred.
