In an unfortunate turn of events, an excursion bus traveling to ruin in Mexico’s Yucatan region has flipped killing 11 adults, 1 child and injuries many others.

The accident occurred Tuesday, December 19 as the bus was traveling along the Mahahual-Cafetal Highway in the southern part of Quintana Roo. The passengers were being taken to see the popular ruins at Chacchoben.

Reports from various new outlets began late Tuesday and into Wednesday morning stating that 31 passengers were on the bus including citizens from the U.S., Brazil and Sweden. Passengers were on a ship-arranged excursion to see popular ruins in Mexico’s Yucatan region, with most coming from two ships belonging to Miami based Royal Caribbean Cruises — the Celebrity Equinox and the Serenade of the Seas.

Investigations continue at the scene.
